Two Centuries of Faith and Devotion — Phuket Vegetarian Festival

From October 21 to 29, 2025, the island of Phuket will host the 200th anniversary of one of Thailand’s most sacred cultural events.

This nine‑day celebration focuses on purification and devotion: participants follow strict vegetarian rules, wear white, and engage in powerful rituals such as street processions, fire‑walking, and spiritual trances.

Centered around the Chinese shrines of Phuket Town, the festival transforms the city into a vibrant spiritual landscape, with yellow taiwanese‑style flags lining the streets and drums and fire‑crackers filling the air. Visitors should prepare for heavy crowds, road closures, and full accommodations.

In commemorating 200 years, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival highlights the enduring importance of community, culture, and faith—offering more than a spectacle, but a profound human journey.

Bangkok Plans Eco‑Friendly Loy Krathong with Strengthened Safety Measures

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has announced its preparations for the Loy Krathong festival on November 5, 2025, emphasizing an “Eco Loy Krathong” initiative that balances environmental protection with public safety. Citizens are being urged to use krathongs made exclusively from biodegradable natural materials.

The main event is scheduled from 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM on the right bank of Rama VIII Bridge (in the Rama VIII Park area), Chao Phraya River. Festivities will include traditional dance, krathong‑making contests, a “Little Miss Noppamas” contest, and local product fairs.

Strict controls will be placed on fireworks, firecrackers, and sky lanterns, while enhanced security measures—such as expanded checkpoints, increased deployment of city inspectors and police, and longer supervision hours—will aim to prevent weapon-related incidents.

In a joint meeting, BMA officials, the Tourist Police, and other agencies defined roles and responsibilities to ensure a safe, well‑coordinated event. The goal is to facilitate participation in this cherished tradition without compromising environmental or public safety standards.

Rama IX Bridges to Be Illuminated on October 13 in Honor of Memorial Day

The Department of Rural Roads (under Thailand’s Ministry of Transport) has announced that on October 13 — the memorial day for King Rama IX — the Bhumibol 1 and Bhumibol 2 Bridges (also known as Rama IX Bridges) will be lit up from 7:00 PM to midnight.

These bridges bear the name of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), whose vision contributed to their development. The annual lighting event coincides with his memorial day and is intended both as a tribute and as an opportunity for residents and visitors to appreciate Bangkok’s nocturnal architecture.

King Bhumibol passed away on October 13, 2016 at the age of 88. Since then, October 13 has been recognized as the “Rama IX Memorial Day.” The lighting event underscores ongoing reverence for the late king and enhances the cityscape as part of cultural commemoration.

Bangkok Moves Toward Resident‑Based Waste Sorting — Pilot Areas to Test New Fee Incentives

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is launching a resident‑participation waste sorting program, with pilot implementation in selected districts. In Bang Phlat’s Soi 57 off Charansanitwong Road, households separate waste into (1) organic waste, (2) recyclables, (3) general waste, and (4) hazardous or bulky waste. Deputy Governor Jakkapan Phiewngam recently conducted an inspection to confirm active compliance.

The new system is set to take effect in October 2025, with a registration-based fee adjustment. Registered households that correctly sort waste will pay 20 baht/month, while those who do not will face a 60 baht/month fee. Registration is available via the “BKK WASTE PAY” mobile app.

Bangkok currently generates around 9,500 tons of waste daily, and its annual waste management cost is estimated at 70 billion baht. The revenue from traditional garbage fees covers only about 7 % of that cost, prompting BMA to pursue cost savings and waste reduction through more effective sorting.

However, challenges remain. In past programs, collection contractors have been accused of mixing sorted waste during transport, undermining public trust. To curb this, BMA plans to strengthen pre‑collection inspections, promote public awareness, and leverage digital tracking via the app.

Lanta Archipelago National Park among Thailand’s Ten Winners in 2025 Green Destinations Top 100 Stories

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) proudly announced that Lanta Archipelago National Park in Krabi has been selected as one of Thailand’s ten winners in the 2025 Green Destinations Top 100 Stories. This recognition further cements Thailand’s growing reputation in global sustainable tourism.

The award highlights the community‑driven marine conservation efforts under TAT’s Krabi Prototype initiative. The featured story, “A Hero’s Tale from Lanta Island,” centers on the “Return Home to Hermit Crabs” project, which addresses the critical shortage of natural seashells—essential homes for hermit crabs—by collecting donations and returning shells to coastal habitats.

Since its launch, the project has collected over 12,000 shells, engaged hotels and local stakeholders, reduced marine waste, and helped restore coastal biodiversity. It has become a model for regenerative tourism that links community participation with ecosystem restoration.

TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool commented, “This recognition shows that sustainability is now a defining principle of tourism development. The Lanta project underlines how partnership among government, communities, and businesses can generate meaningful environmental impact.”

Other Thai destinations honored in the 2025 list include Royal Park Rajapruek (Chiang Mai), Kui Buri National Park (Prachuap Khiri Khan), Uthai Thani Old Town, Mu Ko Chang National Park (Trat), Tha Chai Community in Si Satchanalai, Chak Ngaew Chinese Market (Chon Buri), Chiang Khan (Loei), Nan Old Town, and Na Kluea Old Town in Chon Buri.

Thailand Vegetarian Festival 2025: A Celebration of Spiritual Purity and Cultural Heritage

From October 20 to 29, 2025, Thailand will host its annual Vegetarian Festival (เทศกาลกินเจ/Jay Festival), a nationwide event led by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). Rooted in Thai‑Chinese heritage, the festival emphasizes purification, merit‑making, and blessings through abstinence from animal products and participation in spiritual rituals.

Across the country, communities will stage processions of deities, perform traditional Taoist rituals, and host vegan and vegetarian food stalls. In Phuket, the festival’s highlight is from October 21–29, featuring fire walking, piercing rituals, and grand nightly parades.
In Bangkok’s Chinatown (Yaowarat), the festival is also observed, with yellow flags and “เจ / 齋” signage marking participating vegetarian shops along the streets.
Participants commonly wear white and follow strict dietary rules: no meat, fish, eggs, dairy, or pungent “five spices” (garlic, onions, etc.).
Open to visitors, the festival offers immersive cultural and culinary experiences. The TAT will publish detailed schedules and local guides via its official channels to help travellers plan their visit.

For food lovers, floating markets like Tha Kha, Amphawa, and Lao Tak Lak teem with boat vendors selling grilled river prawns, coconut desserts, and regional specialties. The number of foreign visitors to Thailand in September 2025 was approximately 2.235 million, a significant decrease of approximately 348,000 from the approximately 2.583 million in August 2025.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MOTS) of Thailand released statistics on the number of foreign visitors to Thailand in September 2025.

According to data released by MOTS, the number of foreign visitors to Thailand in September 2025 was 2,235,852. This is a significant decrease of 347,786 from the 2,583,638 in August.

The decrease was approximately 589,000 from January to February, approximately 399,000 from February to March, approximately 173,000 from March to April, and approximately 280,000 from April to May. There was a slight increase of 56,000 visitors from May to June, but a significant decrease of approximately 288,000 from June to July, and another significant decrease of approximately 267,000 from July to August. Then, there was a significant decrease of approximately 348,000 from September to September. This represents a sharp decrease of 1,473,250 visitors compared to January. Furthermore, compared to the same month last year, September saw a significant decrease of more than 11%. Looking at the year-on-year comparisons by country, the biggest declines were China (down 31.6%), Hong Kong (down 32.7%), South Korea (down 24%), and Taiwan (down 18%). As you can see, the sharp decline in the number of tourists from China is noticeable. This is likely due to the economic conditions of each country and the strong Thai baht. Thailand's economy is also currently in a severe slump. I believe that tourism, Thailand's main industry, is key to revitalizing its economy. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has stated that it would like to implement the shelved "Buy International, Free Thailand Domestic Flights" campaign, but the Ministry of Tourism and Sports has not made any concrete statements. We sincerely hope that from October onwards, the number of international tourists will increase and the Thai economy will improve.

Thailand Charts a Greener Future: Launches National Green Tourism Plan 2030

On October 2, 2025, Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports officially unveiled the Thailand Green Tourism Plan 2030, marking a pivotal step toward embedding sustainability in its tourism strategy. At the core is the Thailand Good Travel certification mark, intended to signal to both domestic and international travellers that destinations operate with environmental, social, cultural, and economic balance.

The campaign’s objective is to elevate Thai tourist destinations into the Top 100 sustainable destinations globally by 2030. To achieve this, the plan incorporates multi‑sector collaboration involving Mahidol University International College, Green Destinations Foundation, Travelife, and more than 49 partner organizations across government, academia, and the private sector.

The Thailand Good Travel mark is open to local tourism communities, small-scale accommodations (up to ~50 rooms), and tour operators. Its criteria draw upon GSTC standards but are adapted to Thailand’s context, with a tiered certification approach combining self-assessment and audits.

To support implementation, the Department of Tourism is launching a Green Coach program to mentor operators. Workshops and roadshows are planned in provinces such as Chachoengsao, Chiang Rai, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Nakhon Ratchasima during October 2025, enabling businesses to assess their sustainability readiness.

This green tourism push is viewed as more than a branding initiative: it seeks to foster economic growth, community benefit, and environmental stewardship in tandem. Through strategic support and rigorous standards, Thailand aims to emerge as a global leader in responsible tourism.

Phuket’s First Elevated Road to Connect Directly to Airport, Slated for 2028 Opening

Phuket province is moving forward with its inaugural elevated roadway project, aiming for completion within 2028. The designated route spans 1.95 kilometers, linking Ban Muang Mai in Thalang District along Highway 4027 to the airport entrance intersection. The road will be built as a four-lane asphalt highway, featuring elevated sections over existing roads and mangrove forests to minimize environmental impact. Additional works such as intersection upgrades, drainage systems, and street lighting are planned to enhance safety and usability.

Once operational, this elevated connection is projected to dramatically improve airport access, reduce traffic congestion, and support increased tourism traffic. The new infrastructure is expected to offer faster, safer, and more comfortable travel for both residents and visitors. The total estimated cost for the project is 12,995 million baht (approximately 5.8 billion yen). Looking ahead, interest is growing in potential extensions and integrations with other transit networks to further bolster Phuket’s transport framework.

Bangkok’s Purple & Red Lines: 20‑Baht Fare Cap Extended Through November

On 30 September, the Thai Cabinet approved an extension of the 20‑baht fare cap for Bangkok’s urban rail Purple and Red lines through 30 November.

These two lines have been operating under the capped fare since October 2023, with the previous government renewing the subsidy annually. Some operators had planned to revert to standard rates due to uncertainty under the new administration.

The government also authorized formation of a joint committee including representatives from relevant agencies to evaluate the policy’s impact and to chart its future trajectory.

With this extension, authorities aim to bolster public transit use and ease the cost burden for commuters, while carefully scrutinizing the scheme’s financial sustainability and potential expansion.
