Sukhothai Loy Krathong 2025: A Spectacle of Light & Sound

The Loy Krathong festival holds deep cultural roots in Sukhothai, widely regarded as one of the birthplaces of this tradition. In 2025, the festivities run from 27 October to 5 November, with the ancient city transformed nightly into a shimmering display of lights and cultural performances.

Every evening from 19:00 to 19:45, the “Light & Sound Show” unfolds against the dramatic backdrop of temple ruins, culminating in an additional performance on the final night from 20:30 to 21:15.
The show interweaves illumination, sound effects, traditional dance, and storytelling to evoke the grandeur of Sukhothai’s historical legacy.

At the same time, attendees release their own krathongs—decorated floating baskets—onto waterways to honor the water goddess and let go of misfortune.
Ticket prices are tiered at 500, 900, and 1,200 THB, and advance booking is strongly recommended.

Samsen Road Sinkhole: Road Repair to Be Completed by October 8

In Dusit district of Bangkok, in front of Vajira Hospital, a major road collapse occurred along Samsen Road during the extension works of the MRT Purple Line. The Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) has pledged to restore the road surface by October 8. The collapse is attributed to tunnel excavation and leaks in underground water pipes.

Recovery efforts involve continuous monitoring using ground-penetrating radar, which has not revealed new voids. On the night of September 26, concrete filling began, continuing into September 27; debris removal is scheduled for September 28, with sand backfilling from September 29 onward.

However, the repair was briefly halted when approximately 1,500 tonnes of concrete leaked into the underlying tunnel system. Engineers will await the initial fill’s solidification before resuming work. The total concrete requirement is estimated up to 2,400 tonnes.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, after inspecting the site, confirmed that safety reinforcement measures are underway and expressed confidence in restoring traffic by October 8.

Thailand’s LTR Visa Program Surpasses 7,000 in 3 Years, Attracting Global Talent

Since its launch in September 2022, Thailand’s Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa has approved over 7,000 applicants, driving more than THB 23 billion in economic impact, according to a recent announcement by the Board of Investment (BOI).

The program has drawn skilled professionals primarily from Europe (42%), the United States (19%), and Asia — including Japan (9%), China (5%), and India (4%). BOI Secretary‑General Narit Therdsteerasukdi emphasized that the appeal lies in reduced residency hurdles, streamlined work permits, and favorable tax conditions.

The LTR Visa targets four categories: Highly Skilled Professionals, Work‑from‑Thailand Professionals, Wealthy Global Citizens, and Wealthy Pensioners, with 2025 rule updates also extending eligibility to foreign educators. Notably, applications in the “Wealthy Global Citizen” segment have doubled following these adjustments.

Economically, the program’s impact is estimated to come from visa fees, domestic spending, direct investment, and income taxes, cumulatively exceeding THB 23 billion (approx. USD 650–725 million) over its first three years. To facilitate the process, the BOI inaugurated the Thailand Investment and Expat Services Center (TIESC) in March 2025 at One Bangkok, integrating visa, work permit, and investment services.

With evolving global mobility and digital work trends, Thailand’s LTR scheme is positioning the country as a competitive hub for international professionals and investors — an example of policy adapting to talent flows and economic diversification.

Widespread Water Cuts in Bangkok After Road Collapses Damage Main Water Pipe – No Restoration Timeline Yet

On September 24, the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority (MWA) announced that a roadway collapse on Samsen Road had ruptured a 1,200 mm-diameter water main, leading to water outages along 31 roads across Bangkok. The authority said there is currently no projected timeline for full restoration.

The affected areas stretch widely, from Khaosan Road and the Democracy Monument area to the western side of the BTS line along Si Ayutthaya Road. MWA has deployed water trucks to provide emergency supply to the cutoff neighborhoods.

The collapse occurred around 7:00 a.m. near Vajira Hospital, creating a sinkhole approximately 30 m square and 50 m deep. So far, there are no reports of casualties.

This massive subsidence has disrupted not only water infrastructure but also power lines, traffic, and hospital operations. Nearby residents have been evacuated and medical services partially suspended. Authorities are working urgently to stabilize the area.

Officials, including the Prime Minister and Bangkok Governor, pointed to heavy rains and possible soil collapse into ongoing MRT tunneling work as possible causes. Further ground movement is being closely monitored as efforts continue toward recovery.

Thailand’s August Auto Output Drops, but EV Production Hits Record High

In August 2025, Thailand’s total car production fell 6.11% YoY to 112,366 units, mainly due to lower export demand.

However, EV (BEV) production soared by 2,034% to 7,512 units, setting a new record. EV sales also rose 26.6% YoY to 9,246 units, nearly 20% of all new car sales.

Exports declined as well, with vehicle exports down 10.67% YoY to 73,956 units.

EVs are expected to play a key role in offsetting the decline of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles moving forward.

The Grand Return of Surat Thani’s Sacred Festival: Chak Phra, Thot Kathin & Longboat Races 2025

Article Body
From October 4 to 12, 2025, Surat Thani in Southern Thailand will host its revered annual celebrations: the Chak Phra, Thot Kathin, and the exhilarating longboat racing festival. These events mark more than just tradition—they are a living expression of faith, culture, and community.

Major Highlights
•Chak Phra
This festival celebrates the symbolic return of the Buddha to Earth at the close of the Buddhist Lent (Phansa). Ornately decorated Buddha floats or carriages are paraded on land and river, especially along the Tapi River and via major landmarks like Naris Bridge in Surat Thani city.
•Thot Kathin
Taking place at the end of the rains retreat, this ritual involves offering robes and other necessities to monks. It is an act of merit-making that underscores generosity, gratitude, and the spiritual bond between the laity and the monastic community.
•Longboat Races
More than a competition, these races are a celebration of endurance, teamwork, and local pride. Teams from southern provinces compete, with spectators lining the banks to cheer them on.

Special Attractions & Key Dates
•October 8 is the pinnacle of the festival: 116 beautifully adorned Buddha boats take part in the grand land procession. A day rich in devotion, artistry, and communal spirit.
•During the festival, expect dramatic light-and-sound shows, cultural performances, a bustling handicraft fair, and street food vendors serving sweets like Khanom Tom, a sticky rice dessert typical for Chak Phra festivities.

Cultural Significance
These traditions are deeply rooted in Buddhist values and the social fabric of Surat Thani. Academic studies point out that Chak Phra reenacts the Buddha’s journey and reinforces unity. Thot Kathin emphasizes “dānamaya”—the virtue of giving without expecting anything back. And the longboat races, though competitive, bring together communities in a spirit of solidarity and perseverance.

Visitor Tips
•Be ready for crowds—especially on procession days. Arriving early is advised.
•Dress respectfully when visiting temples: cover shoulders and knees.
•Bring mosquito repellent and something warm for nighttime.
•Try local treats and street food: desserts like Khanom Tom are a must during Chak Phra.

Bangkok Climate Action Week 2025 Launches: City-Wide Climate Festival from 28 September to 4/5 October

The inaugural Bangkok Climate Action Week (BKKCAW) is set to take place from 28 September to 4 October 2025, organized by Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), Just Transitions Incubator (JUTI), Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), among others.

With the theme “everyone has the power to build a sustainable future,” the event features over 200 programs across multiple venues including BACC, Benjakitti Park, universities, and shopping areas. Events will encompass arts exhibitions, workshops, film screenings, pop-ups, interactive sessions and seminar panels.

Key topics include urban heat impacts, air pollution, flood resilience, low-emission mobility, and climate finance. The festival aims to bring together government agencies, international bodies, educational institutions, and communities to exchange knowledge and propose actionable solutions.

A distinctive feature is its grounding in everyday experiences — heat waves, flooding, air quality — making climate issues more relatable. Cultural and artistic elements are used as mediums for dialogue and public engagement.

Through BKKCAW, Bangkok positions itself as a frontline city for climate action. The city hopes to foster awareness, spark community involvement, and showcase that each person has a role in environmental transformation. Watching whether this model becomes a regular fixture will be of interest locally and globally.

Severe Flooding Hits Central Thailand; Schools in Suphan Buri Closed

Heavy rain that started before dawn on September 16 has led to widespread flooding across Central Thailand, prompting school closures and emergency warnings.

In Suphan Buri province, Suphan Buri city’s Suphanapoom School was flooded when water accumulated on nearby roads overflowed into the premises. The school has declared a temporary closure to ensure the safety of students and staff.

The Thai Meteorological Department forecasts that heavy rain with thunderstorms will continue over much of the central region. Provinces likely to be affected include Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chainat, Lopburi, Saraburi, Ayutthaya, western Kanchanaburi, and Ratchaburi. Officials warn of possible flash flooding, inundation of roads and homes in urban lowlands, and landslides in mountainous or hilly terrain.

Authorities are asking local residents to stay alert, avoid travelling during storms, and to refrain from going near flooded roads or riverbanks. Emergency services are monitoring conditions, especially in flood‐prone districts.

Drone Flying in Thailand: 2025 Updated Rules Tourists Should Know

If you plan to fly a drone in Thailand as a tourist, you must be aware of current permissions and regulations.

Firstly, registration with the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) is required, and commercial or filming purposes often demand additional permits.

Flight altitude limits are enforced, especially near airports, military bases, protected areas, and many zones are explicitly off-limits.

Regulation depends on drone weight and camera features. Even lightweight drones may need permits when used for filming.

Night flights usually require special permission. Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) operations are commonly mandatory to avoid conflicts with other aircraft.

Penalties for violations may include fines or confiscation of equipment. Insurance may also be required in some cases.

As a tourist, make sure to register in advance, check the flight location, and secure any necessary permits. Rules are strict and breaking them can mean legal trouble, not just missing shots.
