Foreigner entry fee, supposed to be postponed indefinitely, expected to start being collected in the second half of 2025

According to a statement made by Thailand's Minister of Tourism and Sports Sorawong Thienthong on February 27, a "foreigner entry fee" of 300 baht per person entering Thailand is expected to be introduced as early as the second half of 2025. Although the details have not been finalized, work is reportedly underway to connect information to the previously announced online entry card (TDAC, formerly TM6) system. The TDAC system is scheduled to start on May 1.

The foreigner entry fee was approved by the Cabinet in February 2023, but it was announced in December of the same year that it would be postponed indefinitely, with the reasoning that "it is not a large amount, but it may affect the psychology of foreign travelers." However, it is believed that the decision was made to collect it, judging that "it is a small amount and will not lead to a decline in the image of the country among foreigners."

The foreigner entry fee will be levied by land, sea, and air, but multiple entries will be possible for only 300 baht for 30 to 60 days. Minister of Tourism and Sports Sorawong said that because the amount to be collected is small, they are working to create a system that will not be too complicated.

Thailand's policy interest rate to be lowered by 0.25% to 2%

At the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting on February 26, 2025, the Bank of Thailand (BOT) decided by a vote of 6 to 1 to lower the policy interest rate (overnight repo rate) by 0.25% to 2% per year. The BOT stated that it would respond to "more clear downside risks."

The Thai government had been asking the Bank of Thailand to lower interest rates in order to lower the baht to promote exports. In the first place, there were voices saying that "it is difficult to promote the economy through policies alone," and there was widespread concern that this year's consumer price index (CPI) growth target of 1 to 3% would not be achieved unless interest rates were lowered. The CPI growth rate for January announced by the Thai Ministry of Commerce on February 6, 2025, reached 1.32% year-on-year. It fell within the target zone and accelerated from the 1.23% growth rate in December 2024.

At its meeting on October 16, 2024, the MPC lowered the interest rate by 0.25% to 2.25% per year, but left it unchanged at its meeting on December 18, 2025. Domestic and international media have reported that this rate cut was "unexpected," citing Reuters, which conducted an original survey of 26 economists, with 10 predicting a rate hike and 16 predicting no change.
