103 schools in Bangkok closed due to worsening air pollution

103 schools under the jurisdiction of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will be closed due to worsening air pollution. Schools are expected to be closed for one to five days depending on the situation, with many schools closing from Thursday, January 23, but some have already been closed since Monday, the 20th.

If the principal of a school under the jurisdiction of the BMA determines that air pollution is worsening around the school, he or she can decide to close the school for up to three days at a time. In addition, if the head of each of the 50 districts of Bangkok determines that air pollution is worsening in the district, he or she can order the school to be closed for up to seven days. Furthermore, if the average value of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) per cubic meter exceeds 75.1 micrograms in any of the five districts of Bangkok and this situation continues for three days, the Thai Ministry of Education can order the school to be closed for up to 15 days, or indefinitely if it continues for more than three days.

As of 7 a.m. on January 23, 2025, the average PM2.5 level per cubic meter in Bangkok's five western districts was 75.1 micrograms or more, which is "levels that are beginning to cause health damage," while the average PM2.5 level per cubic meter in all other 45 districts was between 36.1 and 75 micrograms, which is "levels that are beginning to cause health damage."

Forest fire continues in Pak Chong district, Khao Yai National Park

A forest fire has been burning in Khao Yai National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for about a week since January 3rd. The fire is in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima, in the direction of Pak Chong district. As of January 10th, the fire has spread to 1,700 rai (equivalent to 272 square kilometers). Firefighting efforts by local fire departments, local government, and the army have been continuing for days, and it seems that the fire will be extinguished in another day or two.

According to some Thai media, the source of the fire is suspected to be an empty cartridge dropped by a poacher. It is believed that the hot empty cartridge ignited dead leaves and grass, and the fire spread due to the dryness and strong winds.
