Rare Wildlife Spotted at Kaeng Krachan National Park, Indicating Strong Ecosystem Recovery

At Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi Province, visitors witnessed a rare sight on January 19: a black panther and an Asiatic black bear with its cub walking along a park road. The scene was photographed by a tourist, marking another noteworthy wildlife sighting within the UNESCO World Heritage site.

The park is home to a wide range of wildlife species including elephants, tigers, and various large mammals. Officials noted that sightings of elusive animals have gradually increased in recent years as habitat management and anti-poaching measures have improved.

Authorities emphasized that such sightings highlight the park’s thriving biodiversity and ongoing conservation success. Visitors are being urged to reduce speed when driving within the park and to avoid disturbing wildlife by keeping a safe distance at all times.

The photographs were provided by Ms. Suwanna Mookachonpan, and park officials stated they will continue monitoring wildlife activity to support conservation efforts.

Bangkok and Surrounding Provinces on Alert for Flooding as High Tides Expected January 18–22

Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has issued a public advisory warning of unusually high tides between January 18 and 22 along the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok and six surrounding provinces. Low-lying riverfront areas are expected to face elevated risks of flooding. The advisory applies to Bangkok, Pathum Thani, Nonthaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, and Samut Prakan.

According to observations by the Royal Thai Navy Hydrographic Department, rising seawater levels in the Gulf of Thailand are expected to push water levels higher along the Chao Phraya River, with the most notable impact likely around the Navy Headquarters in central Bangkok. High-tide peaks are anticipated between 7:00 and 10:00 a.m., increasing the possibility of overtopped embankments, elevated canal levels, and localized flooding. Areas located outside permanent or temporary flood barriers are considered particularly at risk.

The DDPM has urged riverside residents, floating and riverside businesses, and contractors operating near waterways to closely monitor official updates and prepare preventive measures. Local authorities have been instructed to secure drainage equipment, heavy machinery, and personnel in order to respond quickly should flooding occur.
Seasonal high-tide flooding remains a recurrent phenomenon in Bangkok, even outside the monsoon period, and similar localized impacts are possible during the announced period.
