Weather Alert: Heavy Rain and Strong Waves Expected in Southern Thailand Until 16 December

The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a weather warning for southern Thailand, citing continued heavy rainfall, strong winds, and high waves expected from 14 to 16 December. According to the announcement, southern lower provinces may experience persistent rain, with some areas facing very heavy downpours.

Provinces likely to be affected include Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, as well as Krabi, Trang, and Satun. The conditions are attributed to a strengthening northeast monsoon covering the Gulf of Thailand and the southern region.

At sea, waves in the lower Gulf of Thailand are forecast to reach 2–3 metres, exceeding 3 metres during thunderstorms. The upper Gulf may see waves of around 2 metres, while offshore areas of the Andaman Sea could experience waves over 2 metres in stormy conditions. Small vessels are advised to exercise caution, and boats in the lower Gulf are urged to remain ashore.

Meanwhile, northern and northeastern Thailand are expected to experience cooler temperatures due to a cold air mass moving south from China. Temperatures in the Northeast may drop by 3–5°C, while the North, Central region, Bangkok metropolitan area, and the East could see decreases of 2–4°C. Authorities recommend the public take care of their health and farmers prepare for possible impacts on crops.

Thailand Strengthens Security Along Eastern Border; Domestic Travel and Tourism Remain Normal

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has issued an update confirming that travel and tourism activities across the country continue as normal. At the same time, enhanced security measures have been introduced in seven provinces bordering Cambodia due to ongoing developments in the area.

The provinces affected are Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Buri Ram, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and Trat. Martial law remains in effect in parts of Chanthaburi and Trat, while a nighttime curfew—from 19:00 to 05:00—is now enforced in four districts of Sa Kaeo starting 10 December 2025 until further notice.

Nationwide transportation systems—including air, rail, bus, and marine services—continue to operate as usual. Major destinations such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Samui, Krabi, Pattaya, and Ayutthaya remain fully open to visitors. However, transport services near the border have been temporarily adjusted, with certain train and bus routes shortened or redirected.

Several border checkpoints have also been temporarily closed, and travellers are advised to avoid restricted zones where entry and exit are suspended. These closures apply only to specific areas, while the majority of each affected province continues to function normally. Visitors are encouraged to follow local authority instructions and check official updates when planning trips near the border.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports, TAT, and Tourist Police units remain available to assist travellers, operating 24/7 information lines including the TAT Call Centre (1672) and Tourist Police Hotline (1155). The advisory will continue to be updated as the situation evolves.

Thailand Weather Update: Cooler Conditions in the North and Northeast, Rough Seas Expected in Southern Gulf

The Thai Meteorological Department announced on December 8 that temperatures in the northern and northeastern regions are expected to drop further. A moderate high-pressure system extending from southern China will expand across northern Vietnam and Laos, reaching northern Thailand during the day. As a result, morning temperatures may fall by 1–3°C, accompanied by stronger winds in some areas. Authorities have also warned of an increased risk of fire due to dry and windy conditions.

In the South, the northeast monsoon continues to bring widespread rain and thunderstorms. The lower part of the Gulf of Thailand may see waves reaching around 2 meters, and even higher during storms, prompting officials to advise small boats to proceed with caution.

Regional forecasts show particularly sharp drops in temperature across northern and northeastern provinces, with mountain areas dipping to near 10°C. Central and eastern regions will experience cool mornings, while coastal areas may face strong winds. Both the east and west coasts of the South are expected to see scattered thunderstorms and elevated wave heights.

In the Bangkok metropolitan area, mild morning temperatures and moderate northeasterly winds are forecast. Authorities encourage residents to stay updated with official weather reports and prepare for cooler conditions.

Lopburi 2 Station Opens as a New Gateway to Northern Thailand’s Railway Network

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) officially launched Lopburi 2 Station on 5 December 2025 in Tha Wung District, marking a major milestone in the country’s double-track railway development. The elevated station is designed to improve travel efficiency and enhance safety on the Northern Line, which connects Bangkok with Chiang Mai and key cultural destinations.

One of the highlights of the project is the 19-kilometre elevated bypass, now the longest in Thailand. The structure diverts trains away from Lopburi’s historic town center to preserve archaeological sites while treating passengers to scenic views of rice fields and rural landscapes.

To assist travelers during the transition phase, SRT is operating a free shuttle bus linking the original Lopburi Station with the new facility. Lopburi 2 Station currently serves 14 long-distance, express, and rapid trains, positioning it as an important node for journeys to northern provinces and Lopburi’s well-known tourist attractions.

Passengers can check live schedules and train positions using SRT’s real-time tracking system for smoother trip planning. SRT’s 1690 hotline remains available around the clock for inquiries, alongside updates on the railway authority’s official Facebook page.

Bangkok — This December, the much-loved riverside festival Vijit Chao Phraya 2025 returns to Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River, with spectacular light and fireworks shows scheduled for December 5–7, 13–14, and 20–21 at 8:45 PM. The number of foreign visitors to Thailand in November 2025 was approximately 2.915 million, a significant increase of approximately 341,000 from October 2025, when the number was approximately 2.574 million.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MOTS) of Thailand released statistics on the number of foreign visitors to Thailand in November 2025.

According to data released by MOTS, the number of foreign visitors to Thailand in November 2025 was 2,914,810. This represents a significant increase of 341,067 from October, when the number was 2,573,743.

The number of visitors decreased by approximately 589,000 from January to February, approximately 399,000 from February to March, approximately 173,000 from March to April, and approximately 280,000 from April to May. There was a slight increase of 56,000 people from May to June, but again a large decrease of approximately 288,000 people from June to July, and another large decrease of approximately 267,000 people from July to August. There was also a large decrease of approximately 348,000 people from September to September. However, there was a large increase of 337,891 people from September to October. There was also a large increase of 341,067 people from October to November, and while China, South Korea, Japan, Europe, and the United States head into winter, Thailand is heading into high season, and the number of tourists visiting Thailand is also increasing.

However, when looking at the number of foreign tourists visiting Thailand for the same month compared to the previous year, the results are as shown below, with decreases across the board compared to the previous year except for January.
January: +22.2%
February: -7.0%
March: -8.8%
April: -7.6%
May: -13.9%
June: -15.2%
July: -15.9%
August: -12.8%
September: -11.3%
October: -3.9%
November: -7.5%

Also, the decline in tourists from China and Malaysia, the top two countries, is of great concern. Meanwhile, Japan, once a major source of foreign visitors to Thailand, has seen a decline in visitor numbers in recent years, but in November, the number exceeded 100,000. We can expect an increase in tourists from Japan as the year comes to an end.

In Thailand, there are reports that daytime alcohol sales restrictions will be relaxed starting in December, which will be a major convenience for foreign tourists. December is a month filled with Christmas and New Year's events, so we hope to see an increase in the number of foreign tourists visiting Thailand.

Forecasts indicate that by December 3 it will downgrade into a tropical depression, and the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) states that impacts on Thailand are expected to be minimal.

Meanwhile, a strong high-pressure system extending from China currently covers upper Thailand and the upper South, but is expected to weaken gradually as temperatures rise. This may lead to morning fog and warmer daytime conditions. Nevertheless, the cooler air remains over the highland areas in the North and Northeast, where minimum temperatures could drop to as low as 6–11 °C, or around 8–13 °C in some mountain zones.

Maritime conditions remain a concern. In the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea, wave heights are forecast at 1–2 meters, potentially exceeding 2 meters during thunderstorms. Small vessels are advised to exercise caution or defer sailing under unstable weather.

The TMD urges the public to stay updated with the latest advisories, especially residents in the North and Northeast, who should take precautions for cold exposure and follow health recommendations during the chill.

Bangkok Rolls Out 40-Baht Daily Flat Fare for Red & Purple Lines From December 1

The Thai government has approved a new fare policy that sets a daily fare cap for two major Bangkok commuter rail lines — the Red Line and the Purple Line. From December 1, 2025, general passengers will pay a maximum of 40 baht per day, while students will be charged 30 baht.

Under this scheme, passengers can ride as many times as they like in one day for the flat rate. Payment must be via EMV contactless methods (such as bank debit/credit cards, MANGMOOM cards, or MRT-specific EMV cards). Existing concessions for seniors, disabled people, welfare cardholders, and young children remain in place.

The government frames this measure as a way to ease daily living costs and encourage the use of public transport. The program will run for one year (Dec 1, 2025 – Nov 30, 2026), after which the Transport Ministry will review its viability based on ridership and revenue impacts.
