Heavy rains forecast for northern, northeastern, central and eastern regions, including Bangkok and neighboring provinces

On the morning of September 29, 2024, satellite imagery shows an increase in rain clouds and thunderstorms in northern and northern northeastern Thailand, Bangkok and surrounding areas. Storm activity is also intensifying near the center of a tropical depression located east of Luzon in the Philippines, which is expected to develop into a typhoon by the end of September 29 and move west-northwest toward Taiwan.

In Thailand, weather is unstable due to a low pressure system currently located in northern Vietnam and changes in wind direction. By Monday, September 30, a moderate cold air mass from China is expected to enter the region, causing a change in wind direction in northern Thailand. As the cold air collides with the existing warm air, easterly and northeasterly winds are expected to prevail in the north, while westerly and southwesterly winds are expected to prevail in the Andaman Sea.

This is expected to cause heavy to very heavy rains in northern, northeastern, central and eastern regions, including Bangkok and neighboring provinces. This pattern is expected to continue through early October, bringing continuous rainfall to the affected areas.

Southern regions are expected to start feeling the effects between October 2 and October 5, with scattered heavy rains expected as the weather system shifts.

Residents in areas expected to be at risk are advised to prepare for disruptions and localized flooding.

Phuket Vegetarian Festival to be held from October 3rd to 11th

One of Thailand's most important spiritual events, Phuket Vegetarian Festival will be held from October 3rd to 11th.

The nine-day festival focuses on purifying the mind and body as participants abstain from meat and take part in sacred rituals. Key ceremonies include the Yu-Khen procession in honour of the Nine Emperors and the Khoi Hoi fire-walking ceremony, which is believed to purify negative energy.

Rooted in Phuket's Chinese cultural heritage, the festival allows devotees to take part in age-old traditions. Shrines across the island offer visitors a variety of unique blessings, including a farewell ceremony marking the festival's grand finale, where the gods return to heaven. Popular spots to experience the highlights of the event include Thalang Road and the Clock Tower Roundabout in Phuket Town.

The festival offers an opportunity to enjoy traditional Phuket cuisine, as the island has been recognised as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. From street food to Michelin-starred cuisine, vegetarian dishes are a major highlight, with delicacies such as fried tofu and sesame balls available to health-conscious festival-goers.

Combining sacred rituals with a rich culinary experience, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival attracts local and international visitors, establishing itself as a cultural and spiritual highlight of the year.

Thailand prepares to introduce Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system

Thailand is preparing to introduce an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system to facilitate entry procedures for international travelers.

According to the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the new system will allow international travelers to submit information electronically before departing for Thailand from overseas, simplifying procedures upon arrival in Thailand.

The ETA will complement the existing visa waiver and visa on arrival regimes, which remain in effect. Thai authorities are currently discussing the format and implementation of the system, and further coordination is required before a timeline for its launch can be finalized.

The system is expected to make travel to Thailand more efficient, and while an exact date for its introduction has not been set, it is tentatively scheduled to begin in December 2024. Please keep an eye on future government announcements for more details.

According to news reported by Thai state-run media NNT on September 23, 2024, the Thai Ministry of Public Health has released the latest information on health damage caused by floods, stating that the most commonly reported illness is infection caused by soaking feet in water for a long time due to flooding. All 67 medical facilities affected by the floods have been restored and are now providing medical services as usual.

As of September 22, 10 provinces, including Phitsanulok, Ayutthaya, and Nakhon Phanom, have been severely damaged, with 3,333 households affected. The number of injured has increased to 992, and the death toll has reached 47. In addition, while some temporary evacuation shelters have been closed in Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, and Lampang, 83 evacuation shelters remain in operation in seven provinces, and support is continuing for evacuated residents.

Mental care is also underway, with around 27,000 people receiving support, and 755 people in particularly high stress situations receiving additional care. The main health issues reported are foot infections, respiratory and digestive disorders, and musculoskeletal problems, and medical supplies are being secured.

Thai government considers reintroducing "We Travel Together" co-payment scheme to stimulate domestic tourism

The Thai government is considering reintroducing the "We Travel Together" co-payment scheme to stimulate domestic tourism.

According to Tourism Minister Sorawong Tienthong, the program has helped the tourism sector recover by encouraging Thai travellers to spend more after COVID-19, pointing out that it has benefited many businesses, from large hotels to small food sellers, by offering subsidies of up to 40% on accommodation, airfares and food and beverages at local establishments.

If the scheme is approved by the Cabinet, it can be promoted immediately using existing registration platforms such as the "Pao Tang" application used for the previous scheme.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is also considering the possibility of removing the 18-year-old age limit for participants in the scheme to maximise participation.

Discussions are also underway on a proposed entry tax on foreign travellers to raise funds for tourism infrastructure and safety measures. Details of implementation need to be carefully considered to ensure that the tax does not drive foreign travellers away from Thailand.
