The 31st meeting between the governments of Thailand and China regarding the high-speed railway being developed in Thailand as a joint venture was held in Beijing on May 8, 2024.
According to Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Suriya, who attended the meeting, the opening of the section (total length 251 km) connecting Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima, the capital of northeastern Thailand, which is currently under construction, will be delayed by one year to 2028. The plan is to extend the line approximately 360 kilometers from Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai in northeastern Thailand, on the border with Laos, with construction scheduled to begin in 2025 and opening in 2030.
The Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima high-speed railway will be built and operated using Chinese technology, and the entire construction cost of approximately 180 billion baht will be borne by the Thai side. Construction began in 2017 with the aim of opening in 2021, but construction has been significantly delayed and the progress rate of civil engineering work is only 31% as of February 2024. Furthermore, the design for some sections in the outskirts of Bangkok has not been finalized, and in the suburbs of Nakhon Ratchasima, the line that was planned to be above ground is expected to be changed to an elevated one due to opposition from residents.
