Thailand policy interest rate unchanged at 2.5%

At the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting on April 10, 2024, the Bank of Thailand decided to keep the policy interest rate (overnight repo rate) unchanged at 2.5% per year. At the previous meeting in February, five of the seven committee members supported keeping the rate unchanged, and two supported reducing it by 0.25 points. Similarly, at this meeting, five out of seven committee members supported keeping the rate unchanged, and two supported reducing it by 0.25 points. As a result, it was decided to leave the policy interest rate unchanged at 2.5%.

The gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate forecast for 2024 has been revised to 2.6% from 2.5% to 3% as of February 2024. They expect it to rise to 3% in 2025. In 2023, it was 1.9%. Furthermore, the inflation rate is expected to be 0.6% in 2024 and 1.3% in 2025. In 2023, it was 1.2%.

Ministry of Commerce of Thailand holds “Thailand Fruit Festival 2024 by MOC”

Thailand's Ministry of Commerce has launched the "Thai Fruit Festival 2024 by MOC" from April 12, 2024, with the aim of supporting farmers' agricultural distribution and promoting the soft power of Thai fruits.

The event will run until April 15 as part of the Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2024 at Sanam Luang Ceremonial Grounds in Bangkok.

The event will feature over 75 varieties of fresh and processed fruits at discounts of up to 60%. It consists of different zones showcasing fresh fruits, fruit juices, premium fruits, sticky rice with mango, shaved ice, smoothies, ice creams, cakes, processed fruits and DIT branded drinks.

Thailand's sports minister denies plan to hold Songkran festival until April

The Thai government last year indicated that the water splash event will take place over the month of December 2023 and the Songkran festival in April 2024. However, the Thai government subsequently announced in February 2024 that the 2024 Songkran dates would be from April 1st to April 21st.

However, on April 9, 2024, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) clarified that the 2024 Songkran festival will never last the entire month of April. To avoid confusion for domestic and foreign tourists, TAT will announce the detailed schedule and locations of all Songkran-related events across the country.

It was also announced that his would not affect major celebrations taking place at Sanam Luang ceremonial ground in Bangkok from April 11 to April 15.

Suvarnabhumi Airport passenger traffic from April 11 to 17, 2024 is expected to increase by 37% compared to the previous year

Airports of Thailand (AOT), Thailand's national airport operator, announced that the number of passengers at the six airports operated by AOT will reach 2.61 million from April 11 to 17, around Songkran in 2024, an increase of approximately 29% compared to the same period last year. The number of international flights during this period is expected to increase by 33% to 8,682, and domestic flights to 6,431, an increase of 0.5%.

Passenger numbers are expected to increase by 37% to 1.34 million at Suvarnabhumi Airport in the eastern suburbs of Bangkok, and 630,000 at Don Mueang Airport in the northern suburbs, an increase of 14.8%. Due to expected congestion, those planning to board the flight are asked to arrive at the airport two to three hours before departure.

The 2024 Songkran holiday will be for three days from Saturday, April 13th to Monday, April 15th. In addition, Tuesday, April 16th will be a substitute holiday, resulting in a four-day holiday. In addition, the Thai government has designated Friday, April 12th as a special public holiday, and government offices will have a five-day holiday from April 12th to 16th.
