Thailand's new system allows nightclubs and bars to open until 4am to require alcohol testing of inebriated customers
In Thailand, from December 15, 2023, alcohol sales will be allowed at nightclubs and bars until 4am in specially designated zones in some areas of Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chonburi and Phuket.
At the same time, It has been announced that nightclubs and bars with extended operating hours will be required to close their doors to customers who appear to be overly intoxicated and new regulations will be introduced requiring breathalyzer tests.
The new system is part of an effort to strike a balance between stimulating the economy by extending nightclub opening hours and ensuring nightlife safety.
Additionally, there are public concerns about an increase in traffic accidents caused by drunk driving, and concrete measures will be taken to address these concerns, such as requiring nightlife spots to provide transportation services for patrons who are too intoxicated to drive.
Under the current proposed regulations, anyone with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit of 0.05% would not be allowed to drive. In addition, the sale of alcohol to heavy drinkers will be prohibited in accordance with existing legislation under the Alcoholic Beverages Control Act 2008.
