Thailand's Ministry of Transport has announced that passenger fares for travelling on Bangkok's Blue, Yellow and Pink Line trains will be cut to a maximum of 20 baht by June 2025.
The 20 baht maximum fare has already been applied to the Purple and Red Lines since October 2023. Until June 2025, the fare cap will be extended to the Blue, Yellow and Pink Lines.
Currently, only rail lines overseen by the Mass Transit Railway Authority (MRTA) are subject to the 20 baht fare cap. Other operators, such as the Green Line, managed by BTS Group Holdings, are scheduled to apply the 20 baht fare cap once the Unified Ticket Law is enacted by 2025.
The 20 baht fare cap policy has led to a 27.61% increase in Red Line ridership to 6.21 million. Meanwhile, Purple Line ridership increased by 11.53% to 14.29 million passengers in seven months. Although the policy is expected to result in an annual revenue loss of around 300 million baht, it is seeing a positive impact on public transport usage in Bangkok.
