Bangkok introduces porous permeable asphalt for sidewalks

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will introduce porous asphalt with high water permeability to sidewalks around trees. On September 7, 2023, the first construction was completed in Phayathai District, Bangkok. It is expected that the porous asphalt will allow rainwater to escape into the ground, leading to flood control and the growth of roadside trees.

This porous asphalt with high water permeability is already used in Fukuoka, Japan. The other day, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sitthipunt saw this asphalt when he visited Fukuoka, Japan and decided to introduce it as soon as he returned to Thailand.

BMA plans to repair approximately 200 kilometers of sidewalks by the end of 2023.
